10" Custom Blackbird Chef Knife

SKU: AH-0015

This chef knife was a custom order for a client wanting to create a special gift for his father. Their connection to the aerospace and aviation industry provided perfect inspiration for this knife.

The handle faceting and profile of this knife are inspired by the lines of stealth and fighter aircraft. The piece of shiny aluminum and the handle pin, made from an aircraft drill bit, also speak to common materials and tools used in aerospace production. The dark grey blade patina and African Blackwood handle draw from the colors commonly seen on these aircraft as well.

The handles basic shape was designed to be able to accommodate their company’s logo, subtly engraved and then filled with nickel epoxy to match the blade patina. I affectionately call it blackbird, as the overall shape reminds me of a perched bird with a tucked wing. Despite the faceting, the handle is remarkably ergonomic and comfortable.

This blade is made of 80CRV2 steel; a very sturdy steel that works well for a large knife required to do some heavy chopping. The blade was hand-forged to be 10" long. During the heat treat process, the spine was also drawn back in temper to soften it creating a beautiful, smoky temper line in the patina. The spine of the blade was faceted to match the aesthetic and the heel was rounded for comfort.

The handle and blade were hand-rubbed with a mixture of purified mineral oil and beeswax. Every step of this process was completed in my workshop, creating a one of a kind, hand-forged knife.
