Custom Cleaver

SKU: ah-0031

This cleaver was a custom order for a client wanting to create a special gift for his brother. On custom orders I usually do a drawing to give an idea what the final knife will look like. Usually some tweaks are made along the way for comfort and function but generally the end result is pretty close to the initial sketch, which is included in the pictures.

Cleavers are a very simple knife in shape. I wanted to keep this knife simple, but add some handle details not only for function but aesthetics. The inset on the handle provides just enough grip without being uncomfortable. The handle also swells toward the back to keep the cleaver from slipping out of your hand. The dark grey hombre blade patina and Black Hornbeam handle give it a nice blacked out look. The handle is full, tapered tang and attached with nickel corby bolts.

This blade is made of 80CRV2 steel; a very sturdy steel that works well for a large knife required to do some heavy chopping. The blade was hand-forged to be just under 8" long. During the heat treat process, the blade was drawn back to approximately 55 HRC and the handle was drawn back further to soften it for durability. The spine and choil of the blade was faceted to match the aesthetic and  for comfort.

The handle and blade were hand-rubbed with a mixture of purified mineral oil and beeswax. Every step of this process was completed in my workshop, creating a one of a kind, hand-forged knife.
