8" Custom Farm House Chef Knife

SKU: AH-0014

This chef knife was a custom order for my cousin who was interested in incorporating some special materials. My cousin, his brother and their father had moved and restored several barns on my uncle's property over the years and he wanted to use some materials that came from those projects. The barns were mostly turned into studio space for my aunt who is an artist. Their farm is a very special, unique, and creative place that I have always enjoyed visiting.

The materials used included wrought iron found in one of my uncle's barns and sycamore that had been used for flooring in the renovations. All of the materials, with the exception of the core 52100 steel and brass pins, were given to me by my uncle. I also incorporated a special piece of our family history. My uncle had given me a couple pairs of tongs and a hammer that belonged to my great grand uncle who was a blacksmith. While restoring the hammer, I pulled a nail out that was used as a handle wedge. I believe this nail, along with the hammer, was forged by our great grand uncle. I incorporated this nail into the tang of the knife leaving the head exposed at the end of the handle.

The knife is on the robust side but well balanced, which is the way a farm house knife should feel in my opinion. It has been etched to bring out the wrought iron pattern. The handle and blade were hand-rubbed with a mixture of purified mineral oil and beeswax. Every step of this process was completed in my workshop creating a one of a kind, hand-forged knife.
